A Large Publisher List Is Only the Beginning
A practical approach to publisher screening, covering topic fit, audience location, editorial context and placement requirements.
A large resource list creates options. It does not make every option right for a campaign. H-LAN Global works with a network of 20,000+ link-building resources, and the useful part of that network is the ability to select a relevant shortlist for a particular business.
The selection process starts with the brand, product, market and budget. A publisher should have a clear reason to be in the plan.
Look at context, not just a category label.
A technology site can cover software development, consumer gadgets or enterprise infrastructure. An outdoor site might focus on family camping, climbing equipment or professional fieldwork. Those are different reading contexts.
Review actual articles and consider whether your proposed topic would feel useful alongside them. A broad category match is a starting point for inspection, not the end of the decision.
Separate global visibility from market fit.
Worldwide organic traffic and traffic from a target country answer different questions. Record both when they matter to the brief. A large global audience does not, by itself, explain whether the publication reaches the people you need.
Also consider what drives that audience. A popular section unrelated to your proposed content may tell you little about the opportunity.
Inspect the proposed placement.
Ask about the format, editorial requirements and publication process. Review comparable articles. Will the topic make sense? Is the content readable? Can the publisher explain what will be delivered?
Agree on details that can be checked: the destination page, publication URL, approved content, link requirements, reporting and the process for handling delivery issues.
Give each placement a useful destination.
The destination may be a product page, category, comparison or supporting guide. Choose it because it helps the reader continue the journey. Repeating one destination across every article can miss opportunities to support the wider site.
A stronger shortlist asks: Why this publication, for this audience, with this topic, linking to this page?
